What We Do

Let us manage your website

At EEINN Web Designs, we specialize in small business web design, development and ongoing website management for clients anywhere in the UK. We also manage content edits for standard pages and proof-reading and uploading of your blog pages. We use the Hugo static site platform to code your website and we constantly maintain technical updates of Hugo. Our goal is to make your life easier, manage your website, grow your business and maintain lasting relationships with our clients.

Mobile First Design

We start building your site for mobile devices first, ensuring the code is as lean and optimised with no bloat. This makes the site fast and accessible.

Fully Responsive

Your website will fit all screens sizes - mobile, tablets, and desktop - so visitors can access your site from anywhere and be presented with a stylish website no matter the screen size.

Google research discovered that If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load you will lose 53% of your visitors. Our sites load in 1 second or less ensuring potential clients remain engaged.

Hand-Coded

Years of using platforms such as WordPress, has taught us that most small businesses do not require a hefty framework running on the server, Our websites are static or Hugo-based. Whilst technically Hugo is a framework, all code compiles to a static website. No resource intensive hosting is required.

Article Copyediting

We manage the copyediting on all articles that you wish to publish. Ensuring they have a professional and an SEO friendly style. You send us the article, we upload it to your Hugo-based blog.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our services explained

Still unsure if this is the right service for you? These questions are the most commonly asked. However, feel free to email using the email link below if you require more information about the services EEINN offers.

What can EEINN do for me?

  • What is a Hugo template?

A Hugo template is a part of the Hugo static site generator, which is used to define the structure and layout of web pages within a Hugo site. Hugo templates consist of HTML files interspersed with Go templating language, which allows for dynamic content rendering based on variables, content files, and configurations.

    Hugo templates typically include:

    1. Base templates: These are the core layout files like `baseof.html`, which define common structures like headers, footers, and navigation menus.

    2. Content templates: These files control how different types of content (e.g., posts, pages, sections) are rendered. For example, `single.html` is used for individual pages or blog posts.

    3. Partials: These are reusable template fragments, like a header or footer, that can be included in other templates.

    4. Shortcodes: Special, reusable snippets that allow for inserting custom content, such as buttons, embedded media, or styled elements.

Hugo templates help create consistent, dynamic layouts and content presentation across the entire site, while still being easy to manage and extend. The templates are rendered at build time, producing static HTML files that can be deployed anywhere.

Essentially, Hugo builds static websites that have no backend functionality, e.g. web forms and databases cannot be used in Hugo. However, it is possible to create blog/news sites with the illusion of using a database but the site is pre-compiled on a computer before uploading to a web host.

  • Can Hugo websites provide blogging functionality?

Yes, but with caveats. Hugo sites are compiled before uploading to the server, unlike WordPress. This means that you personally cannot update simply by logging in. However, you can write a post in markdown text language, send the file to us, and then we can add it to your website.

Alternatively, if you have a little bit of technical know-how or want to manage your own blog using Hugo, you can purchase the lump sum payment option and we will provide you with the full Hugo template to manage yourself.

  • Can i change the Hugo template?

We will design and build the Hugo template to your requirements. After this is complete, you can change content but not the structure or design. We will discuss your brand requirements with you to get the look and feel you desire. Usually, we will give you a document to complete that will detail the content I need to design your website.

If you wish to change the design later then we can negotiate a price based on the work involved.

  • How do I get my content into the theme?

You would send content to us and we will incorporate it into the website. Ideally, this would be in markdown text format. We can make changes to the text and images to make them more website friendly.

  • Are there any restrictions on the content I can provide?

You should own the rights to all content you provide. That includes all images, text and branding.

We insist upon a contract signing before beginning work on your website that stipulates the content is your own and not sourced from elsewhere to protect ourselves from legal copyright actions.

  • Can you change the website layout?

We have designed a theme to suit your requirements during the design stage. Sometimes clients don't understand what it means to change the website structure and how much work is involved. It's not practical for us to do a second build for the low costs we charge.

However, we can redesign and build a new theme if you require changes at a later date. You will be entering into a new contract and the old contract should be paid in full first.

  • Why a subscription model?

Websites are time-consuming to build. You are buying expertise from us to do so. The main owner and developer has years of experience and an Honours degree in Web and Mobile Development. If we charged for the time and expertise as an upfront payment, that would costs thousands of Pounds, Dollars or Euros (you do still have that option). By implementing a subscription model with a minimum term, we can ensure you get a quality website without paying a massive fee upfront.

Hugo themes generally require about 3-6 months of development time and adding your content and offering technical support as an ongoing concern takes time. Our costs are really quite reasonable in comparison to what other skilled professions would charge.

  • Why do you not use WordPress?

There are several reasons why we don't use WordPress anymore. The first is that WordPress is a bloated piece of software. This means that it is slow, whilst our aim is to make fast, responsive websites. The only way to overcome this limitation is to purchase expensive web hosting that runs on faster servers. This adds additional costs that most small businesses do not want to absorb.

The second reason we do not use WordPress is it's a security nightmare. The bloated codebase means that there are many bugs that frequently get exploited by hackers. As WordPress runs server-side, this can wreak havoc on both the server and with your website.

It becomes even more unwieldy when you add plugins. It is common for plugins to contain security holes. Often containing malware or bad security.

Also, WordPress as a platform has had some political issues, with the the company who owns WordPress blacklisting different web hosts and companies who make products to be used on the platform. They have even appropriated the work of some of these third-party companies, integrated it into core WordPress, and then blacklisted the company.

We wouldn't want your website to become a victim of these issues, so we avoid using WordPress altogether.

  • Is a domain name and hosting really included?

Subscription packages include a basic UK domain name and basic hosting. More expensive domains and hosting can be added as an optional extra if required. The cost of this will be determined by the Web hosting company we buy hosting and domains from.

  • Do you offer technical support for my website?

Any issues related to your domain name, hosting or Hugo software updates are handled as part of your subscription. Sometimes Hugo will deprecate some functions and we will have to update all client websites. This should not affect you as we will do this on your behalf behind the scenes, if you chose a subscription package.

If you haven't subscribed to a plan that offers updates and maintenance - the Monthly Starter or the Lump Sum payment option - you can purchase support when required, chargeable at an hourly rate with a 1 hour minimum..

Web design agencies in the city near where I live generally charge for a maintenance contract on top of the many thousands of pounds clients have already paid but we include this with the subscription package.

  • What types of website don't you build?

Any type of website with server-side backend elements. For example, shops and membership sites. If you need these you are better off subscribing to a company who provides these services. Shopify, for example, allows you to build an online store.

  • Do I own the website and code?

All our websites, except for the Lump Sum option, are leases, where we retain full copyright of the code. Any content you provide is yours but you cannot use the code or any assets created by EEINN elsewhere, if you choose not to retain our services. You only own the website if you have bought the Lump Sum package or have a custom contract that states you own the code. If you do wish to own the code and assets we have created, you should buy the Lump Sum package.

  • How long are your contracts?

Except for the Lump Sum deal, which is a one-off payment, all monthly contracts have a minimum term of 12 months.

  • Where are you based?

The owner of this website, Ian Morrison, is based in Dalry, North Ayrshire, Scotland. Ian does all work from his home office. The services of other local designers and developers is used, when required.
